Early Days And Education
Cham Tang’s parents fled Vietnam on a boat in 1978 and arrived as refugees in Australia. He belongs to Chinese heritage, and Chinese values and culture have been instilled in him together with the Australian lifestyle. He went high school in Fort Street High School in Sydney. His parents wanted him to become a successful lawyer or daughter. They kept mentioning the children of family friends who were entering higher education with big plans for their careers. Cham faced an added cultural pressure perform well in studies thanks to his Asian heritage.
When Cham couldn’t pass his high school exams for the second year running, he thought his life might be over. Two decades down the line, he is a self-made millionaire running one of Australia’s fastest-growing businesses, and the perfect example of why having a degree isn’t always the best option for everyone to succeed in their life.
Skipping his university wasn’t an easy task, as being a student at Fort Street High School; he was forced to watch his peers excitedly preparing for university. In an interview with news.com.au, Cham says, “Once I could think for myself, I started thinking, ‘What’s the point of all these subjects? I just slacked off”. Cham was smart, but he scored just 49.45 the first time he took his leaving exams and 51.90 on his second try in the next year. These results were definitely a shock to him, but it made him realize that getting a degree might not be for him.
The Phase of the struggle
Cham thought that since he doesn’t have a university degree, he might have to face the big, bad world by himself. Instead of going to university, Cham Tang tried his hand at a series of different jobs. He took an administrative role at NAB, followed by a job at a small casino, a stint as a personal trainer and a period selling Tony Robbins seminars. In every job, he was learning something. While working in the bank, he realized that he didn’t have the opportunity to progress. Gradually, he recognized business was where his passion lay, and this is how Authentic Education was founded in 2009, which helps young entrepreneurs realize their dreams. From high school failure to self-made millionaire, Cham has come a long way.
The Story of Authentic Education
Being a high school failure, Cham discovered personal development and dreamed of doing what he loves, but didn’t know how. After working with several personal development companies for a few years, he co-founded Authentic Education with his business partner, Benjamin J Harvey. The company was named one of Australia’s fastest-growing companies last year and made $3 million in revenue.
